Simon Starling at Modern Art Oxford
Following the off-site screenings of Black Drop earlier this year, Modern Art Oxford invites Starling back to the gallery with a new presentation of the film alongside a series of his recent sculptural works – Venus Mirrors.
This film, specially commissioned by Modern Art Oxford in association with Oxford University, responds to the rare planetary phenomenon of the transit of Venus and its relationship to the beginnings of moving image technology.
Conceived as part of body of work concerned with the beginnings of moving image technology and its relationship to astronomy, Venus Mirrors (05/06/2012, Hawaii & Tahiti (Inverted)) presents the 2012 transit of Venus across the sun as it was observed in June last year from two historically significant observational sites in the Pacific Ocean.
