Casey Kaplan congratulates Giorgio Griffa on the opening of his foundation and exhibition space in Torino, Italy. The Griffa Foundation opens October 25, 2024 with the group show INSIDE. Curated by Sébastien Delot, the show will be open to the public from October 25 – November 28, 2024.

A group show that weaves together visions and languages, revealing the almost unknown identity of a unique cradle for contemporary art – the former Michelin complex in Via Oropa 28, Torino. In his piece for the exhibition, the curator describes the space as “an isle within the city, a small SoHo, just a short way from Torino’s historical center.”

Featured artists Marco Gastini, Giorgio Griffa, Grazia Toderi, Luigi Mainolfi, Nunzio, Elisa Sighicelli, and Gilberto Zorio have worked alongside one another for years in studios located in the former Michelin complex. These artists all share a common interest in systems of representation and the writing of time, as the exhibition brings together their voices in an exploration of the architectural space and the intersections between artistic practices. Their individual trajectories possess an indeterminate energy that flows into and shapes a collective identity. A path that crosses space, borders, languages, and books to always find the shortest route.

The narrative revolves around the building itself – a former Michelin complex and landmark of Turin’s long industrial tradition, transformed in the 1980s into a cradle of creativity and contemporary art, attracting the studios of numerous artists. Drawing from the stories and events that have unfolded over the years in what today hosts the Griffa Foundation, the exhibition weaves together a tapestry of visions that invites us to reflect on the representation of time and space, evoking a sense of collectivity and continuity.
