Igshaan Adams’(b. 1982, Cape Town, South Africa) multi-disciplinary practice is an ongoing examination of hybrid identity, exploring notions of race, religion, and generational trauma. Adams combines weaving, performance, and installation in an intersection of personal history and his native Cape Town roots. For Frieze Los Angeles 2022, the artist presents three heavily embellished weavings inspired by patterns found in the remnants of linoleum flooring removed from the homes of childhood friends and neighbors. Composed entirely of locally sourced materials—wood, stone, and glass beading, nylon rope, silver and fringe, along with cotton twine purchased in Bonteheuwel—the tapestries articulate actual spaces. Relic-like, the extracted ground is a domestic time capsule recording bodily weight. Worn-out motifs reveal the daily movements of the people who live there, shedding history and trauma with each marking.
Adams’ work is currently on view in a solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Zürich titled “Kicking Dust,” first presented at the Hayward Gallery, London in 2021, and his first major show in continental Europe. In the Spring of 2022, Adams will present a solo exhibition titled “Desire Lines” at the Art Institute of Chicago, as well a site specific installation at the 59th Venice Biennale. Other recent exhibitions include SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, GA (2020) (solo); “WHO ARE WE ARE WHO,” Braunsfelder, Cologne, Germany (2020); “Allied with Power: African and African Diaspora Art,” Perez Art Museum, Miami, FL (2020); “Risk,” A4 Arts Foundation, Cape Town, South Africa (2019); and “Mapping Black Identities,” Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN (2019). In 2018, Adams was awarded South Africa’s Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year Award for Visual Art, culminating in a traveling solo presentation of the artist’s work entitled “When Dust Settles.” His work is included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN; the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, Maryland; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; Inhotim Museum, Brazil; and the Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town, SA; among others.

Caroline Kent's (b. 1975, Sterling, IL) abstract practice is guided by a recognizable, yet unnamable language. Signifying schematics, fragments of poetry and fictional text take shape through an intuitive approach to color and form that is declarative yet illegible. For Frieze Los Angeles 2022, the artist presents three monumental paintings on unstretched canvas that share a muted palette, accented by bolts of pinks, purples and blues. Shadowed forms pass through veiled layers of black ground, never reaching the surface. These unknown depths and a reduction in color confront notions of illegibility, proclaiming multiple, indeterminate meanings that challenge the viewer to actively read the image. Akin to scenography in a one-act play, each composition is characterized by the tensions and tumult of stories that build towards a single, climactic ending.
Caroline Kent received a B.S. from Illinois State University (1998) and an M.F.A. from The University of Minnesota (2008). Chicago Works: Caroline Kent, a solo exhibition at the MCA Chicago organized by Jadine Collingwood, Assistant Curator, is currently on view through April 2022. Kent’s work has been presented at institutions such as The Walker Art Center, MN; The DePaul Art Museum, Chicago; The California African American Museum, LA; The Flag Art Foundation, NY; The Suburban, Oak Park, IL; and the University Galleries of Illinois State University. Kent has received grants from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, The McKnight Foundation, and The Jerome Foundation, and was selected as a 2020 awardee of the Artadia Foundation Chicago. Kent’s work is included in the collections of the Walker Art Center, MN, The Art Institute of Chicago, IL, the New Orleans Museum of Art, LA, the Dallas Museum of Art, TX, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, MN, among others. Kent is an Assistant Professor of Painting at the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. She lives and works in Chicago, IL.
