JONATHAN MONK | LIMITED COMPANY | BELVEDERE 21
Jonathan Monk (b. Leicester, England, 1969) is known for humorous appropriations of iconic works of minimal and conceptual art; he adopts creations by artists like On Kawara, Sol LeWitt, Louise Lawler, or Franz West and takes them in a new direction, often weaving in his own personal story. The Berlin-based artist’s multifaceted oeuvre, which ranges from painting and photography to installations and films, interrogates art (history) and its myths and frames novel perspectives on its narratives.
In his first solo exhibition at a museum in Austria, Monk toys with ideas of repetition, of doubling and serialism in his art. The artist responds to the architecture at the Belvedere 21 with a custom-made large-format curtain consisting of fabric panels; printed with views of earlier projects, they span two sides of the room. Carefully selected works from different series by Monk relate to them, some in obvious, some in subtler ways. In another newly conceived installation, Monk pays homage to the oeuvre of Franz West. In the run of the exhibition, some of the works will change or trade places, so that new contexts are constantly being created.
Jonathan Monk: Limited Company is on view through September 21, 2025. For more information, please visit Belvedere 21’s website.
