Edited by Susan Adams, Samantha Sharf, Kristin Tablang and Michael Solomon

Figurative painter Jordan Casteel makes intimate portraits of her Harlem neighbors, mostly men, in everyday scenes, walking a pair of dogs, hanging out on folding chairs perched on the sidewalk. Her use of color and bright lines has been compared to Jacob Lawrence and Henri Matisse. She has had solo shows in New York and Charlotte, North Carolina, been a resident artist at the Studio Museum in Harlem, and shown at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, and has a solo show slated for 2019 at the Denver Art Museum. She is also a tenure-track painting professor at Rutgers.
