JORDAN CASTEEL: RETURNING THE GAZE

CANTOR ARTS CENTER AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY

Opening Sunday, September 29

On view through February 2

The Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University is the West Coast venue for Jordan Casteel: Returning the Gaze. Casteel has rooted her painting practice in community engagement. Based in Harlem, New York, Casteel’s nearly life-size portraits and cropped compositions chronicle personal observations of the human experience.

The exhibition will bring together a body of work made from 2014 to 2018, with recent paintings that reveal Casteel’s evolving practice and a shift in subject matter ranging from cityscapes and subway scenes to women and local business owners. Transforming photographs into larger-than-life portraits with subtle shifts in light and gestural brushwork, Casteel reveals individuals and atmospheres that often go unnoticed.

This exhibition was originally organized by Rebecca Hart, the Vicki and Kent Logan Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Denver Art Museum, previously on view from February 2 – August 18, 2019. The exhibition at the Cantor Arts Center is curated by Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander, PhD, Assistant Curator of American Art.
